The Big Bang

Last September,  we were amongst fifteen students from Physics and Further Maths and ten members of staff who caught a flight to Geneva to explore the active sites at CERN (Conseil Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire), the European Organisation for Nuclear Research.

Upon arrival, we headed out to explore the beautiful city of Geneva using the efficient tram system to reach the active sites at CERN. We made our way to the ATLAS detector in extremely hot weather and the site was completely congested by visitors from around the world as it was Global Open Day; enabling access to all enthusiastic physicists such as ourselves.

Due to the heat and long queues, we were unable to see the actual underground site that day, however, we explored all the sites and fairs.

We had time in the evening to explore the mall across from our hotel and ended up buying a lot of famous Swiss chocolates. After a long and tiring day, we finished with Dr Mehta’s favourite… stonebaked pizza, spending the rest of the day in our dorms relaxing with some Physics calculations.
