School Direct

Our school ethos - We CARECo-operation; Ambition; Respect; Excellence - underpins everything we do.

Hatch End High School is a high performing, innovative Academy in Harrow with Arts College status and a large and highly successful sixth form. We are extremely proud of our diverse and multi-ethnic cohort and outstanding reputation for Inclusion. Standards and progress are high but we are never complacent.

Why School Direct at Hatch End High School?

At Hatch End High School, all teachers receive ongoing, high quality, highly personalised professional development. All beginner teachers take part in a tailored programme of support and professional development and are supported by both a subject mentor and professional mentor.

As well as regular twilight training sessions, which receive very positive feedback from teaching staff, all beginner teachers at Hatch End High School have access to a wide range of professional development opportunities including focused school visits, peer coaching and the opportunity to take part in collaborative professional learning as part of a School Improvement Group.

What is School Direct?

School Direct is a relatively new approach to Initial Teacher Education, which involves schools recruiting trainees directly and working in partnership with Higher Education Institutions to train them. Although there is no absolute guarantee of employment, the idea is that the school will then employ them should there be a suitable vacancy. Last year we supported two beginner teachers to complete the School Direct programme and both of them are now on our Newly Qualified Teacher training programme this current academic year.

There are two School Direct routes: salaried (which replaces the Graduate Teacher Programme) and non-salaried (which operates like the Postgraduate Certificate in Education). As part of the Harrow Collegiate Teaching School Alliance (HCTSA), the high schools in Harrow are working collaboratively to recruit up trainees across many subject areas, who will be trained in partnership with the Institute of Education.

Whitmore is the Lead School for School Direct in the Harrow Collegiate Teaching School Alliance and Hatch End High School has committed to try to recruit trainees in English, Maths, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Physical Education, Social Science and Computer Science. Applications should be made to the Lead School, Whitmore High School, making it clear that Hatch End High School is the preferred Home School.
