PCSHE/RSHE

PERSONAL, CITIZENSHIP, SOCIAL, HEALTH AND ECONOMIC EDUCATION

Students will be expected to develop the following knowledge, skills and understanding: 

  • Critical reflection.
  • Decision-making and managing risk.
  • Developing relationships and working with others.
  • Understanding RSHE (Relationships, Sex and Health Education issues).
  • Citizenship.

Each year group in Years 7 - 13 complete a timetabled one-hour lesson every fortnight in Personal, Citizenship, Social, Health and Economic Education sessions during the academic year. These sessions are based on a set of KEY IDENTIFIED THEMES indicating examples of activities where British Values have been explicitly covered as well as being promoted across the school as implicit within our school ethos and citizenship.

In addition, RSHE (Relationships, Sex & Health Education) is now a statutory requirement. The Secretary of State for Education stated:

Today’s children and young people are growing up in an increasingly complex world and living their lives seamlessly on and offline. This presents many positive and exciting opportunities, but also challenges and risks. In this environment, children and young people need to know how to be safe and healthy, and how to manage their academic, personal and social lives in a positive way. This is why we have made Relationships Education compulsory in all primary schools in England and Relationships and Sex Education compulsory in all secondary schools, as well as making Health Education compulsory in all state-funded schools.

At secondary, teaching will build on the knowledge acquired at primary and develop further pupils’ understanding of health, with an increased focus on risk areas such as drugs and alcohol, as well as introducing knowledge about intimate relationships and sex.

RSHE is covered in a range of subjects across the curriculum, particularly in Science, PE and Food Technology. We have taken the opportunity to study the RSE curriculum in detail and encompass many aspects within our PCSHE curriculum. Students will cover a wide range of areas within these lessons. We will also use some tutor periods/assemblies and there will be several FROZEN DAYS or half days when students will come off their main timetable to cover a significant unit – particularly when an outside speaker or organisation will deliver a high-quality sessions as we recognise the importance and specialist status of many of these topics requiring expert guidance.

In Years 7-9, students are actively encouraged to complete PASSPORTS, which aim to widen their experiences both in school and the wider community. Each passport has a section on PCSHE/RSHE to make them more aware of key issues affecting their lives. We hope this will promote key issues. Our unique HEHS Radio is used within tutor time across the school and the station will also seek to raise awareness of key issues and give students the opportunity to self-express or get involved in a range of projects. We run weekly assemblies and will email you following any of these sessions when we cover sensitive or complex issues, so that you are aware of what we have covered and to enable us to work together in partnership to embed understanding and address and misconceptions or concerns.

Finally, students can expect to have some additional sessions within the year as enrichment, based on student need and /or responding to local, national or global issues arising during the academic year. Hence there will be some flexibility

Methods of Assessment / Accreditation Structure

Students are involved in self and peer assessment through questioning their own beliefs and attitudes and in self-evaluation by reflecting on their performance and approaches to work. Each tutor holds a class PCSHE portfolio with exemplars of completed work from sessions.

Students complete regular reviews of their performance and an end of year summary of their achievements, skills and experiences.

There is no formal qualification achieved in Personal, Citizenship, Social, Health and Economic Education.
