Curriculum

Modern Foreign Languages

Subject Overview

Languages Taught

We offer French, German and Spanish. Native speakers of these languages and any other foreign language are encouraged to do early entry GCSE in that language.

Year 7

Students study one of the following languages:

  • French
  • German
  • Spanish

Year 8

Students who have been successful in the study of their first language and who receive a recommendation from their teacher, have the opportunity to pick up a second language.

Year 9

Students begin the three year GCSE course in the language they have been studying in year 7 and 8. Students who have been successful in their first foreign language, receive a recommendation from their teacher to begin the study of a second language, in addition to the language studied in year 7 and 8. The first term of the new language is an intensive beginner’s course. In January students progress to the GCSE course in the second language.

Year 10 and 11

Students continue the GCSE course in one foreign language. This is particularly important for those recommended to follow the EBacc. Bilingual students, who can read and write their home language can be entered for the GCSE early, regardless of their age.

The exam board for French, German and Spanish:  Edexcel

Year 12 and 13

We strongly encourage able students to continue with a language to A level

  • French Exam board:  Edexcel
  • German Exam board:  Edexcel
  • Spanish Exam board:  Edexcel
