Fresh Enterprise

On Thursday 13th June, Lewis Norton-Scott, Aman Haria and Dominic Livingston went to visit Belazu, a food manufacturing company in Greenford. The company was started by two best friends, George and Adam, and 10 buckets of Provencal olives on a ferry. The two friends built up the company and went on to forge a notable reputation in the food service industry, supplying an illustrious customer base including many Michelin-star restaurants. Lewis, Aman and Dominic’s trip was part of a series of events that had begun with the Year 9 GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition group hosting an event whereby representatives from Belazu’s Fresh Enterprise School Food Matters project gives secondary school students the chance to learn about careers in food and to develop their own paste, pesto or sauce that may be put into production by Belazu Ingredient Company.

After the Year 9 food group produced a wide range of sauces in their lesson, a winner was chosen to go forward to the final at Belazu. On the day there was some stiff competition from five other schools and everyone was keen to win. Each school group had to give a presentation about their sauce and present it for the judges to taste, and then they had to answer questions from the judging panel about its ingredients and marketing ideas.

All schools presented their pitch and sauce, and the judges withdrew to deliberate. After a tense 15 minutes the judges returned and revealed the results; Lewis, Aman and Dominic’s sauce was the runner-up in the category for the “Most Commercially Viable” product. A huge achievement and demonstrates great ingenuity and innovation, not to mention being able to present an amusing and entertaining pitch in front of a large audience.

Excellent effort, well done boys!
