Pupil Premium and Covid Recovery

What is the Pupil Premium?

The ‘Pupil Premium’ is a grant given to schools for each child who currently claims Free School Meals (FSM) or who has done so in the past six years.  It is really important that all parents/carers of children eligible to do so register for free school meals, even if they don’t choose to have them, as the grant enables us to provide extra resources for our disadvantaged pupils.

Research has shown that children who have been on or are on Free School Meals do not attain as highly as other children in school.  The government provides this grant so that we can commission and allocate additional support to ensure that they do.

The Pupil Premium Strategy Statement outlines our plan for 2023/2024 and includes details on how the money will be spent in specific relation to:

  • Teaching (e.g. CPD, recruitment and retention)

  • Targeted Academic Support (e.g. tutoring through the National Tutoring Programme, one to one support, structured interventions)

  • Wider strategies (e.g. related to attendance, behaviour and wellbeing)

The statement highlights the barriers to achievement, intended outcomes and strategies to address our identified challenges.  We select strategies and interventions based on evidence-based practice, referring, for example to research conducted by the Education Empowerment Foundation.

This report also includes details on how the Recovery Premium will be spent, which is additional funding the school has received targeted at supporting our students as a result of the education disruption caused by the pandemic.

What is Covid Recovery?

Recovery Premium Year 2022 to 2023:

For 2022 to 2023, we continued to build on the foundations of the previous year, developing strategies we feel had a high impact on student outcomes to ensure that support is put in place for the students that need it most.

Hatch End received an additional £83,352 to support our students in this next stage of educational recovery (Recovery Premium).  As outlined in the Pupil Premium Strategy Statement (which includes details about the Recovery Premium), the school also makes full use of the National Tutoring Programme, including the School Led Tutoring grant, where we are putting in place tuition for students who require additional support, on a ratio of 1 to 5.

Covid Recovery During the Pandemic (2020-2021)

In July 2020, the Government announced funding to support students to catch up following what has been a period of considerable disruption for every child.  For the academic year 2020 to 2021, Hatch End High School received an additional of £73,120 (Covid Catch Up Funding) to support our students in Years 7 to 11.  Hatch End High School also received an additional £10,824 to support our Year 12-13 students as part of the 16-19 Tuition Fund.

In order to maximise the impact of our provision, we used the Covid-19 Catch Up Funding alongside our Pupil Premium, as well as other funding streams.

Hatch End High School believes, as difficult as the lockdowns have been, all of our students will be able to catch up and achieve success.

During 2020 to 2021, we put in place a range of strategies to support our students, outlined in our Covid Catch Up Report, which includes evidence of impact.

The programme was incredibly successful, building on the extensive experience we already had in putting in place interventions for students that need additional support.  We utilised the National Tutoring Programme and the particular highlights have been the Academic Mentoring Programme, online interventions and developing our IT infrastructure which enabled us to be fully prepared for the second national lockdown.

The great work Hatch End High School has been doing to support students has been recognised by various national organisations such as Teach First.  As a result, the Secretary of State for Education visited us at Hatch End High on Thursday 22nd April 2021 to find out more about the Academic Mentoring Programme.  During his visit, he watched our Academic Mentor, Ms Zare deliver a live lesson as well as meeting some of our Year 9 students who are on the mentoring programme.  He also had a tour of the school and visited some lessons.

Hatch End High School receives an additional £8042 (2023-2024) to support our Year 12 -13 students as part of the 16-19 Tuition Fund.

Our 16-19 Tuition Funding is highly focussed on the students whose learning has been most disrupted by the pandemic and who have most need of additional input. Small group tuition of one tutor between 1 to 3 students is provided for Year 12 and Year 13 students needing support with GCSE English resit and GCSE Mathematics resit. Additionally, these students are also be offered extra support in their other subjects.
