Recognition and Rewards (previously known as Praise and Rewards):

The system at Hatch End High School

Recognition and Rewards are one of the fundamental ways we demonstrate that we CARE.  We set out to encourage a sense of belonging, community and ownership. The school is continually developing and extending a range of events and activities which will encourage that sense of belonging.  We CARE about embedding intrinsic motivation in all of our students and actively promote a growth mind-set.  In addition, rewards will be given in as many areas of school life as possible (so they are accessible for all students) and form a continuous process throughout the school year. Rewards are applied by teachers but are triggered by students.

Rewards may also vary over the academic year according to on-going review and research.  The school will also apply a range of different rewards over the year according to how it feels outstanding behaviour, effort and academic achievement should be acknowledged. We monitor that no group of students are over or under-represented in our allocation of rewards.

The following rewards are presented for progress in line with our Behaviour Policy:

  • Badge awarded in assembly to be work on blazer/jumper.
  • Text/postcard sent home.

Subject Excellence Tokens

Each subject teacher holds subject tokens, mini cards attached to each subject area, awarded for exceptional effort or achievement, such as superb contribution to lesson etc.

Each lesson, each subject teacher has the opportunity to award a single token to a deserving student.  Students are encouraged to collect a full set of tokens

WE CARE Excellence Tokens

All staff are able to award a WE CARE excellence token to students for positive acts that link to our WE CARE ethos of Co-operation, Ambition, Respect and Excellence in our community.

Students are encouraged to collect one of each of these to complete a full set of tokens.

Student of the Week Heads of Year issue this award to the student with the highest number of 1s in a week / fortnight.
  • Certificate awarded in assembly.
  • Announced in fortnightly newsletter.
Tutor Group of the Week

Heads of Year issue this award to the tutor group with the highest number of 1s in a week/fortnight.

Heads of Year will sometimes change the focus of the tutor of the week criteria to be inline with a key focus in the year group.

  • Certificate awarded in assembly.
  • Trophy awarded to the tutor for a fortnight.
  • Announced in fortnightly newsletter.
Kindness Award Students and staff have the opportunity to nominate students for a kindness award for those who have shown to be consistently kind or a one-off act of kindness in line with our WE CARE ethos.
  • Certificate awarded in assembly.
  • Announced in fortnightly newsletter.

 

SLT Praise

Students can be nominated by any member of staff for a range of different reasons, both inside and outside of lessons.

Examples might include:

  • Making outstanding progress in a specific lesson or group of lessons.
  • One-off incidents for supporting the school or local community in line with our WE CARE ethos.
  • Outstanding public speaking.
  • Praise letter sent to parents/carers.
  • WE CARE Excellence tokens awarded.
  • Students praised in Senior Leadership meeting.
  • Announced in fortnightly newsletter.
Headteacher’s Certificates / Letters of Recognition

This is not an exhaustive list, but this award could be given for a range of achievements such as the examples below:

  • Being in the top 10 list of students gaining the highest number of 1s in lessons over a term.
  • Support a school event (showing responsibility).
  • Outstanding contribution to the local community or school life.
  • Representing the school at a local/national level.
  • Enthusiastic participation in a school activity
  • Certificates presented in annual awards assembly and other assemblies.
  • Formal letter sent home.
  • Badge awarded to be worn on blazer/jumper.
  • Name published in fortnightly newsletter.
  • Priority invite to reward trip(s).

Rewards Glossary

Award How students can achieve it
Code 1s Students are automatically awarded a Praise if they gain a ‘1’ in a lesson for outstanding engagement in the lesson but they also earn Praises for doing something above the normal expectation – e.g., outstanding piece of homework.
Excellence Tokens

These are split into two categories, Subject and WE CARE.

Each subject teacher holds subject tokens, mini cards attached to each subject area, awarded for exceptional effort or achievement, such as superb contribution to a lesson etc.

WE CARE Excellence Tokens are issued to students for positive acts that link to our WE CARE ethos of Co-Operation, Ambition, Respect and Excellence.
