Year 10 Statistics Trip

Year 10 Statistics TripOn Wednesday 13th of December, Hatch End High School Year 10 GCSE Statistics students were invited to the annual Christmas Maths Lecture at Middlesex University. This year, the Lecture was all about Statistics and how they are used in Medicine and trials for vaccines.

The Lecture was interactive and incredibly fun - we learnt about different medical trials that happened during the COVID Pandemic, and how Statisticians help them assess risk and reward. We also learnt about how to clean 'noisy data', and how Statisticians can verify if newspaper headlines are true by completing independent investigations.

The lecturer (Jen Visser-Rodgers) was very friendly and creative - in the lecture she played a couple of fun probability games with us, and showed us different graphs that were zoomed in and out to show that data can be shown to look good or bad from different views.

I personally went to play in one of the games called "Play your Cards Right", where you had you use chance and probability to try and win the most points - it was really fun and helped highlight how to use probability in a competitive setting...it was even better that I ended up winning!

Overall, it was an interesting and educational experience and the whole class enjoyed the trip - thank you Mr Farrar for organising it!
