Alumni News - Rajan Modha

Posted on: 24/05/2022

Past Hatch End High School student Rajan Modha, 27, was one of nine DofE (Duke of Edinburgh) gold award holders who lined the steps of Westminster Abbey earlier this year at Prince Philip's Memorial Service.

Rajan first started on the DofE scheme back in 2009 and completed it in 2017, after cycling more than 180miles through the Gambia in Africa over the course of four days to gain his gold award.

Whilst in Africa, Rajan met with dozens of other young people from around the world who were also doing the DofE. Rajan said, ‘The common ground was the DofE. It is just amazing how different countries and cultures are brought together by this one scheme,’ he said.

Rajan, who now works as a freelance climbing coach and for IT firm Oracle, said he was presented with his gold award by Prince Edward. ‘It was an honour to meet Prince Edward. When you complete your gold award it is the pinnacle moment. It just goes to show that if you stay consistent and follow it all the way through, you are rewarded. It was a surreal moment'.

Rajan added that the DofE ‘unlocked’ his ‘hidden passion’ for mountaineering and allowed him to find himself as an individual.
