Year 10 Enrichment Workshop

IMG 7766A group of Hatch End High School Year 10 students were invited to an Enrichment Workshop run by Dr Winnie Wechie, Medical Registrar, General Acute Emergency Medicine, George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust, West Midlands.

Dr Wechie volunteered her time and was committed to travelling to London from Nuneaton to give the career pathway talk as part of her involvement in Melanin Medics, an organisation seeking to improve academic achievement, empower, and encourage STEM to young people.

Dr Winnie’s passion was palpable as she spoke about her work to remove self-limiting doubts and to empower students with confidence, knowledge and soft skills to secure them with a prosperous future.

Our students were fascinated and inspired by Dr Wechie’s journey, who came from a humble background, her presentation (including an opening interactive questionnaire using an app), followed by a talk about career pathways, the different scenarios into medicine, the future of medicine, and finally a feedback session.

At the end of her presentation, Dr Wechie, generously offered up two students the opportunity to be mentored by her, something we hope students will take up as the value gained will be a game changer in their plans for the future.

Well done to all of our Year 10 pupils for taking part and thank you to Dr Wechie for this fantastic experience for our students.
